EECMD in Georgia
Georgia has been at the heart of EECMD’s work for more than a decade. Our engagement began in 2009 through the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and continues under EECMD since 2017, building on years of experience in supporting democratic development, political dialogue, and civic participation.
EECMD works with political parties, civil society organizations, young leaders, and local communities to strengthen democratic culture and encourage more inclusive political participation in Georgia.
One of the core areas of our work is supporting democratic political parties through capacity-building initiatives, while promoting dialogue, cooperation, and more transparent and citizen-oriented political processes.
Alongside this, we invest heavily in democracy education and leadership development through initiatives such as the Democracy Schools network across six regions of Georgia, which empowers thousands of young people, activists, journalists, and civic leaders across the country.
EECMD also focuses on bringing democracy closer to citizens through voter education, public dialogue initiatives, and participatory civic platforms. Across all programmes, EECMD promotes inclusive participation, with a particular emphasis on empowering women, youth, and ethnic minorities in democratic and political life.
Today, due to the increasingly restrictive environment for civil society organizations in Georgia, EECMD is no longer able to operate in the country at the same scale as before. Nevertheless, we remain committed to supporting democratic values, pluralism, and active civic participation in Georgia and across the wider region.
