On December 10, International Human Rights Day was celebrated at Telavi Democracy School in cooperation with Public Defender’s Office and the Telavi Municipality City Hall. There was an exhibition of the artworks, by Elene Akhvlediani Art School students, created especially for this day, concerning the issues of human rights protection. Besides, thematic brochures were spread in the city.

The exhibition was followed by discussion at Telavi Democracy School, attended by the schoolchildren, as well as by active students and Democracy School alumni.

Nikoloz Sharvashidze, Democracy School Coordinator thanked the participants for their interest and talked about the importance of this day. He also highlighted the significance of Eleanor Roosevelt’s involvement in this matter. The deputy mayor of Telavi Municipality, Guga Gurabanidze noted, that youths’ active engagement in civil and political processes matters a lot. Furthermore, it is their direct obligation to be actively involved in the governing process of their municipality. Besides, Mr. Gurabanidze briefly overviewed the possibilities which Telavi Municipality is offering to the young people. The discussion was continued by Eter Shiukashvili, representative of Public Defender’s Office, who overviewed the situation in Georgia in terms of human rights protection, major achievements and challenges in this regard.

During discussion the problem of bullying at schools was also addressed.  The necessity of decreasing the level of violence among youth and the ways how to reach that goal was highlighted by the participants of the meeting.
