The role of political parties in achieving the 2030 Agenda has been consistently overlooked. Political parties in fact have an important role to play in empowering citizens and ensuring inclusiveness and equality in society. When political parties represent the interests of the people and work together for the common good, it will ultimately lead to improved governance and sustainable development. This relates closely to the targets in Goal 16 and 10, which are under review at this year’s High Level Political Forum in New York, as well as SDG 5.

GPMD will put political parties under the microscope at a special Practitioner’s Round Table, to be convened in New York as a side-event to this year’s HLPF. Our members from Africa, Central America and Europe will present their findings from their programmes and critique how political parties can make the SDGs a reality. If you are a practitioner or policy-maker in the international development sector, this event is a rare chance to share your experiences with counterparts from all corners of the world.

The goal of the session is to come up with key Acceleration Actions to increase the attention given to political parties in achieving the SDGs.
