EECMD deplore the violence perpetrated against citizens and democracy activists in Kobuleti.

We deplore the violence perpetrated against citizens and democracy activists in Kobuleti today. Violence and the threats of violence, used by anti-democratic, pro-Russia groups, have become a regular occurrence. So is the inability of the police to timely prevent these crimes.

This is seen as encouragement by these organizations. In the face of the Russian intervention in Ukraine, encouraging already re-energized anti-democratic, violent groups raises questions as to the genuine commitment of the Georgian government to democratic and European aspirations. These aspirations shall manifest in deeds not only declarations. We urge the government to undertake effective measures to punish those responsible for today’s violence in full accordance with the law. On a more systematic level, we call it to prevent and do not allow the actions of the groups that carry out the propaganda and political work on behalf of the occupying power.

We will continue to support democracy networks and activists and further empower their better organization and consolidation.
